South Pacific backpackers acknowledge the region as the safest and most peaceful part of the world for travellers to visit. Here you'll find blissful beaches, quaint fishing villages, lush tropical rainforest, fantastic snorkelling and diving and an efficient network of backpacker establishments. Prices on the whole are reasonable, not as cheap as Asia but more affordable than Europe. Prices are generally on par with Australia and New Zealand. One of the highlights of a South Pacific backpacking holiday is staying in a beach hut in a secluded location. Fiji is a particular favourite for this, and groups of young girls and boys fresh out of school find its beaches, a few water activities and flowing beer the ideal paradise. Fiji also has fantastic tropical rain forest and some of the best scuba diving coral reefs in the world for the more alternative backpacker market. For those looking to escape the crowds, Samoa is the preferred destination - a more mature backpacker looking for a more mellow travel experience. The Cook Islands is a great base to begin or end a world travel, a slice of paradise that has all the comforts of home including bars, nightclubs and moped rides around the island. Tahiti, though expensive, is an adventurers paradise. Tonga has a bit of everything as well as being the best place in the South Pacific to spot humpback whales. However, its tourist infrastructure is undeveloped and rather unreliable so be prepared for flexibility.
